lyrics

Elza

The priest found Elza one morning in June
Nailed to the church door in her naked skin
Not a drop of blood to be found on the scene
But on the altar a bucket filled to the rim

There was rumour about vampires
Wandering about the village at night
Marianne claimed to have seen them in the graveyard
But you see lot when you are a hundred years old, almost blind and out of your mind

Men set out when the moon was full
Carrying holy water and wooden stakes
Their pistol chambers filled with silver bullets
They only killed Ignacio’s cat, who’d been roaming out there, since his poetic death

For weeks the streets reeked of garlic
Nobody dared to set a foot out at night
On their patrols the men killed many more pets and scavengers
But vampires who killed Elza and drank her blood could not be found

By then everybody knew the killer was amongst them
A villager, a neighbour, family, a friend
The first to suspect was that strange husband Henry
Who was howling, crying and screaming in despair day and night, night and day

They buried Elza on a cold Wednesday morning
The bucket with her black stinking blood buried with her
Soon from her grave a tree started growing
In years it will carry little olives and Henry will caress them

There’s an invisible hand
There’s a ripple in the water
